Newtown Old Town Hall - Isle of Wight

Back in 2016 when we visited the Isle of Wight, we wanted to see inside the Old Town Hall in Newtown, owned by The National Trust, but unfortunately it was closed.  Luckily when we went a couple of weeks ago it was open.

The Old Town Hall is in the tiny hamlet of Newtown which was once the hub of Parliamentary elections and actually sent two members to Parliament. It is amazing to think that this small corner of the Isle of White was represented by two Members of Parliament.  A list of names can be seen inside the Hall, but I forgot to take a photo of that!  One of whom was that of Canning, who was the Foreign Secretary when he represented Newtown and later became the Prime Minister. This 17th Century building is the only remaining evidence of Newtown's former importance to the Island.  Adjoining this tiny hamlet is the lovely Nature Reserve which was a very enjoyable walk and one we hope to do again in the future.

The building became derelict due to neglect but was rescued in the 1930s by Ferguson's Gang who were a mysterious group of young benefactors who raised the funds for repair and gave it to the National Trust.  There was an interesting exhibition about the gang inside the building. Definitely worth looking up more about this group of influential and enlightened young people who saw the need to rescue such old buildings that are an important part of our history and culture, which seems all too easily to be slipping from our grasp today.

I look up at a big old clock.

We didn't take many photos for some reason - I think we were too busy reading all the information cards around this fascinating building.

A wonderful quilt commemorating 300 years.

This chimney was amazing!

Rochester Castle & Rochester Town

Today we took a trip to Rochester Castle.  It didn't take us too long to get there and it was a lovely sunny and warm day.

I can't wait until we get inside so I can explore!

Gosh do we get to go all the way up there?

Lots of steps to climb and we get to stop on each level which is good.

Looking out to the Cathedral.

Looks like there are bars on this window...which is probably just as well as I wouldn't want to fall out!

Reading all about the history of the castle.

There were several groups of school children also visiting the castle today.  In fact the group of boys were very well behaved and polite - more polite in fact than some ladies we encountered in the castle!

View out to the Cathedral, but a bit hard to see in this photo.

There were lots of different levels

Each level had an information board that told us about what would have been there.

It was quite interesting.

We are quite a long way up now...and it is a long way down...

But we still have further to climb!

This looks odd?

A board explains the half window.

Walking along, it is very atmospheric.

Not much further...

We are at the top, with fabulous views all around.

Soon we have to go back down again..

Almost down, looking back up.

This was the area where the kitchens were, but the placard was blocked off so I could see quite what it said.

Looking back the castle after our visit.

We decide to have a walk around Rochester

Look at the wall!  It was very lopsided.

We had lunch in this very nice cafe in their back courtyard with the scent of jasmine blossom.

A green letter box!

The big people enjoyed walking round the various antique, vintage, charity shops and book shops.

The day was finished with Strawberry Crepes and cream!

Watermouth Castle, Devon

One wet day in May we ventured out to Watermouth Castle.

Large imposing doors at the entrance...will they let us in I wonder?

I am looking forward to going inside.

As you first go in there are various scenes from 'The Olden Days'

Eughh... you really do need a wash mate!

I watch the lady mixing a cake...or is it bread rolls?  I am not so sure.

Careful!  Don't cut yourself.

I help with selling the bread, but no one wanted any today.

Poor patient...the nurse seems to be looking after them well though.

Trains!  I love trains!  I watched this set for ages.

How much do I weigh?

Interesting....

Seems this chap is enjoying listening to the radio

Now is she really smiling while she works??

Ouff...how does this work?

A little bit scary...

Watching the miners...

A lot scary!

Oops, he caught me watching him work.

Now this was fun.

Even more fun....vroom!

Off I go!

Just my size.

Lots of bikes of different shapes and sizes.

Watching the pretty water light show.

Outside, trying to avoid the rain, not especially successfully I saw this gnome in the woods.

More gnomes hard at work.

There is always a queue!

Oh dear...I didn't know we had to bring our own toilet paper...

Mr Tall

He looks one way...

...and then another.

Don't fall off Humpty!

We were the last to leave!  Just as it started to dry up as well.
